If there is any part of our work that is becoming an art, grading is that part. Our customers have often said it’s a shame to put sod on top of that graded topsoil, because it looks so nice. While your topsoil and grade might not be what excites you about landscaping, it is of paramount importance determining the level of success you achieve towards reaching your landscaping goals.

When we quote a topsoil depth for lawns, we include a 20% compaction factor. Topsoil is delivered with a lot of air in it. By the time we are done walking on, driving on, and raking it, the soil compresses between 15 and 20 %. Of course this affects the price you pay, but in return you receive a true topsoil depth.

When making presentations to our customers, the hardest type of work to explain the importance of, and differentiate ourselves from competitors, is grading. A properly setup grade allows for drainage away from buildings, through swales, and along lot lines; dictates what height walks, patios, and pools will be set at; controls where beams can be placed; and creates landforms that are pleasing to the eye.
